Alcohol and time - Memento Mori

I have the Daily Stoic by my bed and read it when I remember, it has been there for the past 6 years, so I reckon I have read the whole book at least a couple of times - so I have a tiny understanding of stoic philosophy. 

One of the most famous stoic sayings is Memento Mori - which literally translated means 'remember you must die'. On the outset it is does not seem a positive message, however if you were to put 'so live life to the fullest' at the end, you would achieve the more literal meaning.  

As we get older, we realise that time is indeed the most precious commodity we have one we cannot replenish, get back or reverse however much we might want to.

This maxim has been adopted by others too and perhaps it is at the route of some amazing achievements in life we are unaware of.  Steve Jobs definitely did big things in business he changed many games and their rules for good - and he lived by understanding the reality, that each day could be his last.

Did you know we all have roughly 4000 weekends in our life? 

If we are lucky enough to live to the ripe old age of 80 that is. 

I am 43, which means I have 1,880 weekends left to experience - I'll leave it for you to work out what you have left. However, seeing that number makes me both thankful for what I have had, but determined to not waste what is to come.

How much time do you think has been stolen by alcohol in weekends past ? 

The hangovers, the lie-ins, the poor sleep, the poor diet choices, the turned down opportunities, the excuses, the poor mood, the lack of energy. It makes me feel determined to win that back in my remaining 1,880 weekends.

Alcohol is one if not the biggest time zappers there is. So, if you really want to live by the notion of Memento Mori, then changing your relationship with alcohol is truly the action that supports the thought and the words.
